Diversity in Western vs Eastern Transformational Leadership

B.M. Bass developed a study in 1985 on leadership in the western world which focused on western leaders and how they influenced their subordinates. What he found was that leaders across organizations shared similar attributes. He referred to this style as â€Å"transformational leadership†. Through this style, leaders â€Å"inspire followers to transcend self-interest for the good of the organization and can have an extraordinary effect on their followers† (Robbins Judges, 2012:188). Bass discovered that cultures that used this leadership style placed importance on the development of individual’s work performance within organizations. Confucianism is based on the teachings of the Chinese philosopher Confucius, which emphasize s societal roles and hierarchies that exist within organizations. Collectivism is a more modern thought that is based on the Confucian idea of harmony for the collective good. Both these philosophies play important roles in the emergence and presentation of transformational leaders in many Eastern cultures. Confucianism is based on an establishment of five relationships which emphasize the importance of hierarchies as well as the leadership role as paternalistic and benevolent (Spreitzer, Perttula Xin, 2005). The relationships outlined in Confucian thought, as well as the outlined conduct, come together to establish the conduct of leaders within modern organizations. Each of the relationships in Confucian thought dictate how leaders and followers should interact within Eastern organizations. These contribute to building what is termed a high power distance. This is defined as the degree to which members of a culture expect power to be distributed unequally (Hofstede Minkov, 2010). Low levels of power distance encourage collaboration, where high levels foster authoritarian relationships between those in power and their subordinates. For Rusty James this looking up to his brother represents an absence of the mother as reflected in his fear of being alone, and his need for a stronger leader. The absence of a mother and a leader is something which is experienced by all who have difficult transition to adulthood. Rusty James has visions of being an exact replica of Motorcycle Boy, which everyone in the neighborhood including his friends explain to him that will never happen. This is common to one during his or her teenage years who are looking for an ideal, someone who they can follow and learn from. Rumble Fish are fighting fish which, if put together, will try to kill each other or if the fish sees its own reflection, then it will repeatedly attack its own image. The fish therefore are a metaphor for Rusty James and his gang who are heading into self destruction through pointless gang warfare. As one can see, Rusty James is heading no where fast. This quotation tells us that if Joe was in Pips property he would have done much more, it means that Joe hasnt been agreeable and helpful. Now Pips attitude has gone worse for his family, his character towards his family has changed a lot. He is now ashamed of his social class. Later in the story Pip gets a letter from biddy. The letter was very formal this is very unusual because you dont get a letter that is formal from a family member or from a close friend. This tells us that the relationship between Pip and his family is getting more distant. In the letter biddy uses words like Mr Gargery instead of his first name Joe which shows that Pips relationship with his family is getting more distant. Pip feels very disappointed about Joes proposed visit to London. Considerable disturbance, Mortification these were Pips Feelings towards Joe showing that he didnt want Joe to come to London and that Joe would be a great disturbance to him and that he is going to embarrass Pip again.
